Children To Be Baptised

M onday morning I had the privilege of hearing key note speaker Rev. Lillian Daniel at the Mercer Preaching Consultation. She said, “The preacher’s job is to take large bills and to break it into small change that you can use.” The goal is not to make it less than what people deserve (by dumbing it down) but to break it up so that it is useable. This metaphor is very applicable when talking to children. There is a tension between “dumbing down” the message of Christ and speaking over their heads. We have to find a happy medium by being able to explain God to them in an accurate yet attainable way.

One way that we helped “take large bills and break it into small change” was by having a Faith Class for children who are beginning to ask questions about baptism and are interested in inviting Christ into their hearts and lives. Together we explored who God is as we worked through the book, “God…Should I be Baptized?” Four of the children who attended this class have made professions of faith and will be baptized this Sunday, September 29. Please see below. I am so proud of each of them. They are mature beyond their years. They come from loving homes and a supportive church. They shine at their school as well as in their extracurricular activities. I am honored to be able to walk on this journey with them.
