When I was a student at McAfee School of Theology the student body had t-shirts made with a quote from John Claypool. It said, “There is more honest faith in an act of questioning than in the act of silent submission, for implicit in the very asking is the faith that some light can be given.” At Mercer, questions were not only permissible but expected. It was a safe community where, as a student, I felt like I could ask questions as I dissected and learned from the text.

At our church, Sunday school and Wednesday night Bible study is a great place for dialogue and learning to occur. This past Sunday the some of the smallest members of our church (kindergarten – fifth graders) were studying the story of Moses. One child raised their hand and asked, “Why didn’t God just free the Israelites instead of sending Moses?” Another child spoke up and said, “God wanted to show Moses something and work through him like God wants to work through us.” I love listening to their conversations as they wrestle with the text. We should never outgrow this process of asking questions and learning from one another. May we always be lifelong students.
